This is the third consecutive financial year of positive performance and the highest annual return since 2020–21.
MySuper’s performance during the financial year 2024/25 indicates that it was a robust year built on consistent monthly gains, with only three months recording negative returns.
The highest monthly return of 2.5% occurred in November 2024, while the lowest, –2.1%, was recorded in March 2025.
“The past three years of annual performance for Rainmaker Information's MySuper index of market participants has been one of the most consistent of the past decade,” said David Gallagher, executive director of research at Rainmaker Information.
“The increasing international equities exposures by funds have also been a strong contributor to total returns, as has the depreciation of the Australian dollar relative to the US dollar.”
“Notwithstanding the economic challenges globally, MySuper assets have continued to grow at above average historical levels since the global pandemic, more than outpacing above average inflation in the same period."
MySuper has 15-million member accounts that hold $1.1 trillion, offered via 54 MySuper products.
There were strong positive returns posted by all asset classes, but much of the heavy lifting was done by equities.
The S&P ASX 200 index delivered 13.8% for the financial year, while international equities significantly outperformed Australian equities delivering 19.1%.
According to APRA’s latest March 2025 data, Australian equities and international equities hold 54% of superannuation’s $2.8 trillion in total investments.
Other asset classes also performed well, with Australian listed property delivering 14%, Australian fixed interest returning 7.5%, while international fixed interest and cash delivered 5.4% and 4.2% respectively.
